Much of this week was spent building out details for the planet which will be the setting for my second book. An alien world which, while suitable enough for humans to live on, is full of life that evolved under different conditions than Earth. Humanity spent a good 40+ years getting to this world, and all of the survival training courses the crew had available to them were based off of the wildernesses of Earth. Even with all the technology they brought with them, surviving on this new planet will not be easy.
Figuring out what makes this world different, how life would have evolved and what adaptations would be advantageous on a planet that orbits a red dwarf helps to shape the setting and inform what kinds of stories might be possible there. This is an area that my love of sci-fi and space exploration really help me chase down all kinds of interesting research topics! With the amount of planets around alien stars we have found, the universe is proving that if you can imagine a world, no matter how odd, it probably exists out there somewhere.
All of this research and world crafting has also served the purpose of keeping my mind off the fact that I'll getting my manuscript back from the beta reader this week! That and with the disturbing trend the United States is taking these days, anything I can do to escape reality for a bit helps keep me sane. At any rate, I very much look forward to the feedback and making any edits needed to make my first book the best that it can be!
